Yates brothers to race Vuelta together

13 August 2018 16:45

Twin brothers Simon and Adam Yates will race together for Mitchelton-Scott at the Vuelta a Espana.

The Australian team confirmed on Monday that the British siblings would compete alongside one another in the final Grand Tour of the season.

Simon, the team's lead rider, is considered among the favourites to triumph at the Vuelta, which begins on August 25 in Malaga.

The pair rarely team up, although they were involved in last year's edition of the same race.

"The Vuelta a Espana wasn't originally on my program," said Adam.

"But, together with the management, we came to the decision that doing the Vuelta after the Tour [de France] would be another good chance to get some experience in riding multiple Grand Tours in one year."

A promising Giro d'Italia ended in disappointment for Simon, who faded badly after leading for 13 days, with Chris Froome taking victory.

He said: "My preparation has been very different to the Giro d'Italia because like a few guys that will line up in Spain, I have one eye on the world championships later this year, so it will be interesting to see how my body responds, but as always I'll give it my all to achieve a great result."

Simon finished second at the recent Tour of Poland, with the brothers having signed new deals for Mitchelton-Scott last month.
