Voynov to remain ineligible in NHL until 2020

9 April 2019 23:10

Slava Voynov will remain ineligible for the entire 2019-20 NHL season for "unacceptable off-ice conduct", the league has announced.

Free agent Voynov was initially suspended indefinitely following his arrest in October 2014 that stemmed from an alleged domestic violence incident.

The player pleaded no-contest to a misdemeanour charge following a reported altercation with his wife.

A ruling was made on Tuesday that Voynov, whose six-year, $25million contract with the Los Angeles Kings was terminated, would be able to return to action following next season.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement: "I have determined that player Slava Voynov engaged in acts of domestic violence directed at his wife.

"Today's ruling, while tailored to the specific facts of this case and the individuals involved, is necessary and consistent with the NHL's strongly held policy that it cannot and will not tolerate this and similar types of conduct, particularly as directed at a spouse, domestic partner or family member."
